Tales From My Past

1. Set Your Soul Free

In all honesty, our Peck was correct. Life is difficult.

I always thought that by 21 it would all be sorted out. The guy, the marriage, the kids, the job. In all honesty, I could not see what lay ahead of 21. I really and truly believed it would all just happen.

And then I turned 21. None of the items on the list were checked so I decided I had to begin creating what I wanted (Even though hindsight I had no clear cut goal or clue what that was.)

So I moved to England in 2000. I had four different jobs in the span of seven months. I was a waitress at Chilis, a saleslady at Gap, a customer services representative at M&S and then an admin assistant at the Royal Berkshire Fire Brigade. And God it was a lonely ride, my only companion a fresh loaf of bread that I kept in my bag for comfort food.

Amy Winehouse is singing to me. I have access to the net and thoughts of being on Norwegian Air, heading north, to a place with fjords, rugged terrain and amazing chocolate.

I am really excited.

From Cairo To Cape Town

Friday 29th April

Woke up this morning with a pounding headache. Not today, I thought! I’m about to embark upon one of the most exciting adventures of my life!

Within twenty-four hours I shall be writing to you from the Southern Hemisphere. I have been as far east as Japan, as far west as the US and Canada and as far north as Narvik in Norway, above the Arctic Circle – and now I’m plummeting South! How exciting.

But Oh God my head hurtsplease make it go away.

I feel nauseas. I run to the toilet and… you can figure out the rest. This is not looking good.

Nonetheless, I am determined to get on that plane.
